How to recognize signs that someone is a narcissist

Dating a Narcissist is not fun. They make you feel important in the beginning, but end up being an emotional vampire in the end who is full of drama, temper tantrums and takes advantage of you. You might not even know you've dated a narcissist. Although there certainly is a range and spectrum of narcissism, clinical Narcissistic Personality Disorder affects 1% of the population. According to a study by Twenge and Campbell in 2009, the rate of NPD his more than doubled in ten years. There are ways to recognize signs that someone is a narcissist.

According to the Mayoclinic.com, these are traits of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).
  • Believing that you're better than others
  • Fantasizing about power, success and attractiveness
  • Exaggerating your achievements or talents
  • Expecting constant praise and admiration
  • Believing that you're special and acting accordingly
  • Failing to recognize other people's emotions and feelings
  • Expecting others to go along with your ideas and plans
  • Taking advantage of others
  • Expressing disdain for those you feel are inferior
  • Being jealous of others
  • Believing that others are jealous of you
  • Trouble keeping healthy relationships
  • Setting unrealistic goals
  • Being easily hurt and rejected
  • Having a fragile self-esteem
  • Appearing as tough-minded or unemotional
A person with NPD exhibits unrealistic self-confidence while expecting others to agree with or bend to his or her expectations and schedule, often bursting into a temper if they don’t get their way.

So what does this look like in real life?
Real examples of phrases that demonstrate narcissistic tendencies can be easily found in Portland Craigslist personal ads. Here are examples of phrases that serve as red flags for narcissistic traits (whether these men are narcissists is unknown, but they advertise themselves in what isn’t their best light):

“In a city this size there must be one woman who has a soul coupled with an interest in getting to know me.”

"Hot SWM Looking for Hot date"

"Handsome business exec looking for you to show me a good time"

Notice how these ads brag about qualities and/or expect someone to entertain them or be good enough for them? These are people to avoid. I wanted to list some ads that women posted but after skimming a hundred of them, I couldn't find any. Not that I think women can't be narcissists, but maybe women don't present themselves that way in writing. If anyone has examples of female narcissistic headers in personal ads, feel free to post them.

Manifesting Your Mojo

Over the last few years there has been hype centered around the book, The Secret. Everyone is “manifesting” what they want through a combination of psychology (a.k.a. positive thinking), supposed quantum physics (the law of attraction and aligning yourself with what you want to bring into your life), and spirituality (asking for the universe to help you).

Here are the basic components of asking and receiving what you want:
  1. Decide what you want. (Actually, this is way harder than it sounds.)
  2. Align yourself with what you want. (If you want to be rich, live like you are rich, if you want to attract a cheerful, funny mate behave that way yourself.)
  3. Visualize what you want. (See yourself driving a Mercedes or I suppose, for some, fantasize about sleeping with a really hot girl named Mercedes.)
  4. Go after what you want. (Okay, this one I added from my own personal experiences. But I’m not New-Agey enough to think that by never leaving your house and only daydreaming about what you want, can you really get it. believe in being proactive.)
  5. Be thankful.

So here is a little anecdote from my own love life (or lack of) to demonstrate.
Once upon a time, I lived in Japan. A few months after I arrived, I decided that I wanted to have a Japanese boyfriend. After all, I was in Japan. I did want to be multicultural and internationalize and all that jazz. As soon as this international mindset swept over me, I was asked on three dates in one week, all by men from different cultures. The weird thing is, I really didn’t do anything to cause any of these dates other than go to the same public places I always went to. One man was Indian who I met in a dance class, another was a bartender from Mexico who I sometimes spoke with (okay, flirted with), and the other was a Japanese man who went to the same dance studio where I took classes. Even though I’d known them all for months, they all asked me on a date the same week. It was quite thrilling. So I went on three dates that week, decided I was completely overwhelmed and didn’t want to date three men at the same time. (Three is a bit much!) Then they all vanished within two weeks, which was fortunate because I knew none of them were really right for me.

So one could say I followed the 5 step program above, asked and received, but realized that wasn’t what I wanted. I had to start over. This time I tried to visual one man and I decided he should be Japanese because if I had a Japanese boyfriend it would motivate me to want to learn Japanese, help me be a cultural ambassador, etc.. I then visualized my really hot break dance teacher. Well, I kept trying to visualize, but I didn’t do a very good job because negative thoughts would invade my head like: Why would he like me?— I’m his student. Why would he like me?— I’m his worst student. Why would he like me?— I don’t wear designer sweats and heavy make up in his dance classes like those tiny, waif-like Japanese girls. Etc.
One day (whether or not it was related to positive thinking or not is difficult to prove), I thought, “I want Mr. Hot Dance Teacher to invite me into his staffroom to talk with him and give me a present.” The present I was imagining in my mind was, naturally, a kiss. Two days later, he did invite me to sit down and talk with him in the staffroom and he did give me a present. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a kiss. It was incense. Still kind of nice.
But I continued to go back and forth thinking: Does he like me? No, he doesn’t. Maybe I don’t want a boyfriend who can’t speak English. Yes, I do, I want my hot dance teacher. Yeah, but why would he want me?

Could it be that the reason my hot dance teacher was hot and cold in his display of feelings, one day adjusting my posture in a very hands-on, intimate way and then the next day practically ignoring me, because I subconsciously exuded these hot cold thoughts of yes, no, yes, no? Not surprisingly, he found a cute, Japanese girlfriend who is a good dancer and wears designer sweats and lots of makeup. My internal monologue came true to my despair. (Fortunately, his girlfriend was really nice to me and I liked her very much.)

Next, I focused all my fantasizing on my pretend boyfriend, Captain Jack Sparrow. Really, I don’t want Jack as a boyfriend, I just tell everyone at work that I do. Then again, Johnny Depp is pretty hot, so maybe I wouldn’t mind having him as a boyfriend. And there are no self-conscious or negative thoughts that get in the way of my adoration for Jack (like there was for Mr. Hot Dance Teacher) because, Jack isn’t real. So everyday when I taught English to my students, I would randomly throw in, “Who is my boyfriend?” or “What time did I go on a date with Jack Sparrows last night?” The best game was the Pictionary game that for the final round and 100 pt. bonus question they had to draw the sentence, “Captain Jack Sparrows love Chastity.” I was pleased, though not really amazed after a year of prepping them, that they actually were able to guess the sentence after two minutes.

With all this positive visualization, is it really so shocking I did eventually meet the man who fit Jack Sparrow's description? I was in a little bakery outside the Kotoni station in Sapporo when this gorgeous,  man walked in. And I swear to god, he looked like Captain Jack Sparrows. He was a foreigner like me with a goatee and the long dark hair, though not quite as long or dread-lockish as Jack’s, but still quite nice. He wore a bandana and slightly odd, mismatched clothes. His eyes were dark, framed by such thick lashes I at first thought he wore black eyeliner. Not only was I drooling, but completely in shock. Here was my pirate.
I made eye contact and smiled at him. Unfortunately, I was so shocked and unprepared for the actual event of seeing the man I had been fantasizing about, I couldn’t think of anything to say. I tried to gather up the courage to make small talk or ask him if he could read one of the signs in kanji as a rouse to talk to him, but alas, the English language completely failed me. Then he escaped before I could buy my break items and was gone.

So for two entire weeks, I thought of all the things I could say to him, and fantasized even more about pirates. Then in the Odori Subway Station, after I had just finished teaching my volunteer belly dance class, and was dressed in long black and white striped pants and a pirate belly dance costume with a modest cover-up shirt when I had the silly thought: I was dressed like a pirate and like attracts like, so it would be only fitting if I bumped into the good-looking Jack Sparrows look-alike. It was just a random, goofy thought in my head.

How incredible, and slightly humiliating (I was dressed like a pirate!) that I should randomly see him in the subway minutes later. I was so shocked, even more so than the first time, and just smiled and walked past him. Then I decided, no, I must go talk to him. So I sucked up the courage and went over and said hi. Then, of course, when I spoke I sounded like an idiot. I think I said something like, “You look like a pirate. I like pirates.”

He looked over my unusual attire and said in a sexy French accent, “Oh, really? I wouldn’t have guessed,” or something along those lines.

This is a good example of four of the steps from The Secret
I declared what I wanted: Jack Sparrow.
I aligned myself by acting like he already was my boyfriend in my fantasies and when I spoke about him and I dressed like a pirate.
I visualized what I wanted. I didn’t even have to do anything. It just happened.
Then I was proactive and actually spoke with him.
Of course, that way way back in Japan. I'm really more into Mr. Darcy these days. . . . At least, someone is like Mr. Darcy in his conduct.
Here's me being proactive here. . . if anyone happens to know any gentlemen that look like pirates, preferably the Captain Jack Sparrows kind (not the have-no-teeth-and-a-peg-leg-kind) who behave in a most gentlemanly manner like Mr. Darcy, feel free to steer him my way.

What gentleman or gentle lady are you going to manifest with your fantasies, the books you read and the attire you wear?

How to Impress Ladies: Aptitude for Sexiness

Recently, a friend recommended Anthol Kay's blog Married Man Sex Life. His approach is to combine a variety of relationship advice from "evolutionary psychology, Pickup Artist “Game”, sociology, biology, life experience, romance novels, crappy women’s magazines, far too many books, blogging, behavior modification and cheap porn." As such, you can imagine a slight player approach to getting his results-- namely how to increase sex in a married man's life. His basic plan trains men to become alpha males (becoming sexually attractive for a woman) while maintaining beta qualities that make a woman want to stay with a man. According to Kay, Alpha qualities are characteristics like being rich, ambitious, handsome, assertive, protective, funny, riding a motorcycle, being good at something like dancing, music or having other talents. Beta qualities would be making a wife chicken soup when she is sick, picking up her dry cleaning and helping with dishes. Men who tend to be natural Betas are more likely to be willing to learn to be Alpha to please a mate. Natural Alphas pretty much do what they want. They are less likely to possess a willingness to learn new skills.

According to Roy Huggins, graduate of Portland State University with a master’s degree in psychology and current counselor, “Aptitude is generally attractive, especially for women (for men, too. It's just that men are also heavily influenced by boobs, etc.) Aptitude in something that the viewer thinks is important and is especially attractive. Most people don't get turned on by an effective chess player -- unless they're really into chess. But some things feel important to pretty much all people. I recall that in the late 90s, when American society started to realize that technical aptitude was extremely valuable for financial success, geeky guys (who possess a certain minimum of social skill) suddenly had a much easier time getting dates. Also, in communities centered around an activity (i.e. co-ed clubs or studios/schools where people study things like dance and martial arts) the most expert members tend to attract romantic attention from their peers. Quite often these people are men, but not always.

Summarizing this, having skills is attractive. Whether you hangout with a bunch of bowlers or are in an art community, and you are able to show off your skills in such a way that they flatter you, you are more likely to attract someone. As such, one might reason that the more abilities or aptitudes one has and the better one can perform them, the more likely he/she has in attracting a mate . . . or date. And these are especially important if you are a man. So keep that in mind, gentlemen.

Take a moment to think about the skills, talents and abilities you excel in. Are you showing them off? I don't mean brag about them. Are you actually singing in public, karaoke, in a choir if you are a singer? If you know how to tango dance, do you attend milongas and drop in classes? Do you meet up with, network or mentor other professionals in your field? When you write a personal ad, do you mention things you are good at? (Listing sleeping, eating and playing video games are not going to impress anyone.)

If you don't think you are good at anything, you need to ask someone you know. Or maybe you need to develop an aptitude in something.

Valentine’s Day Depression Cure

Okay, it isn’t exactly a little known fact that Valentine’s Day is a holiday for women. Well, married women and women with boyfriends or girlfriends. Except in Japan. Men get showered with gifts of chocolate! There is a separate holiday to give gifts to women. When I lived in Japan, woman complained they gave far more chocolate away than they received.

That still doesn’t solve the problems of being alone on what is supposed to be the most romantic day of the year. To temporarily alleviate this problem, consider indulging is a little chocolate.  Besides being an aphrodisiac, chocolate has many chemicals and endorphins that cause you to feel good . . . even when your life otherwise sucks.

So, throw a party, invite friends over to watch (and possibly make fun of) a corny romantic movie, build up your nerve to ask someone out on a date, go out on a “date” with a friend. But no matter what, include chocolate in your plans. Or any other comfort food that will make you feel good and conquer the Valentine's Day Depression.

On Valentine's Day,  prior to this day, or even after this day, is a good time for creating a personal ad. It is my personal and unofficial observation that there is an increased presence and use in personal ads in January and February.

If you are looking for a long term solution to this problem, consider reading post for that comes out later this month: Aptitude for Sexiness and next month's Manifesting Your Mojo. That way, next year you will have a date when the big V-Day rolls around.

How to hook a girl: writing a good personal ad

How do you write a good personal ad? Below is a list of things to include in a personal ad to catch a woman’s eye. Many have good examples taken from Portland Craigslist personal ads that men wrote looking for women.

Start with an interesting title. Think of a good hook that describes you, your personality or interests or something women might like. If you start you ad with something like, “I enjoyed reading Pride and Prejudice” or title your ad “Prince Charming looking for Princess,” it will appeal to a woman's romantic side and they will keep reading. At least a certain demographic of women will. On the other hand, if you didn’t actually enjoy reading Pride and Prejudice, then that plan isn’t going to work. Certainly the ad titled, “Does your unborn baby need a father?” was an odd, if not eye-catching ad.

Talk about what you want in a polite and tactful way. Focus on the positive, not on all the things you don’t want. Here are two well-worded examples:
“I am honest and drama free and would want the same in return.”
“I am also physically fit and looking for the same.”

Describe your interests.

Let your personality show in your word choice and how you phrase things. It is okay to be quirky and memorable.
“I'm completely ready for a life-long rapturous romance, friendship, play and a partner to ride the river of life with. Deep and heart-felt conversation is a must for me, because I believe it's the backbone to true intimacy.”

Use humor. A hilarious ad had this list:
Employed? Yes
Car? Yes
House? Yes
Funny? Abso-F'n-Lutly
Kids? No
Psyco-x's? Nope! All my stalkers are in the past! Currently taking applications for future psycho-x's. ;)
Goals? Yes
Adventurous? You have no idea! I've actually considered changing my middle name to "Adventure".
Attractive? Yes. I'm not Taylor Lautner, but chances are you aren't Megan Fox. LOL

Be sweet. If it fits your romantic personality to say all the ways you would like to spoil the woman you love like giving her foot massages, making chicken soup for her when she has a cold and snuggling, and other sweet gestures, that will make her heart melt. But again, make sure these are things you actually enjoy.

Be honest (especially about your age). And if you are in an open relationship and seeing other people.

Include an accurate photo of yourself. Here are some tactful, non-demanding ways to ask for a photo:
“I can provide a photo upon exchange with you.”
“If I sound like someone you'd want to talk to, email me and tell me about yourself. Pictures are a plus, but really just tell me about you (age, height, that type of stuff).”

Use a spell check and grammar check. It makes you appear intelligent and well-educated. And not lazy. It shows you want to make a good impression.

Be concise and succinct in what you say. Many online ads don’t have the limits newspapers do, but still be aware of how much you are saying and the quality of the information. Anything more than a page might be too long and anything under a paragraph will be too short.

Be sincere. There is no point in saying you want to be a girl’s Romeo if you hate Shakespeare and won't be able to explain why you said that later.

For a humorous look on how to make women run, screaming away from your personal ad, wait for next months's post.

Racy Thought of the Day

Lady Chatterley came across advice for ladies on a "researched" method for a woman to get a man to pay attention and listen to her from a website called Blue Pill. The suggestion was for a woman to take off her blouse and corset in order to make him listen to what she had to say. Despite one's doubts in this method, Lady Chatterley decided to put this to the test. Though with one addition: She wrote on her bosom in magic marker: I am breaking up with you.

Where to look for love BEFORE Valentine’s Day

Many single people wait until February before they start looking for a date. And, of course, because they’re in such a desperate, crabby, why-doesn’t-anyone-love-me mood, they are unsuccessful in getting a date and instead binge on a bag full of chocolate. Not that Lady Chatterley has ever been one of these people.

So, how are you going to avoid this predicament? Start looking early!

Places to find love
Forget bars! If you want to find someone intelligent, classy, and who might share the same interests as you, try these alternative places.

Book clubs: Looking for nerd love? All you have to do is an internet search for “book clubs” in your local area. Barnes and Nobles has groups. For those in Portland, the book mecca of Powell’s Books has three different locations in the Portland area and their calendar is packed with authors, events and book groups. And if you are a guy and really want to go someplace filled with women, check out the Cheeky Pages romance book group. (Though they also have mystery, science fiction and other genres.)
http://www.powells.com/calendar.html

Romance Writers of America: There are over 30 local chapters. The Portland chapter, Rose City Romance Writers has a membership of over 100 people, mostly women. Those are pretty good odds for the guys. At least for guys who enjoy supporting romance writing.

Dancing: Women love men who can dance and what better place to go than someplace that teaches dance? And for the men, there are almost always more women at places that teach dance or host open dance so you are in high demand.
For a complete list of dance events going on in Portland go to Portland Dancing.

Meet Up: This group is a way to connect and meet other people with similar interests. For example, on the Meet Up website, there are categories such as arts and entertainment, sports and recreation, heath and support as well as many others. In Portland, there are tarot card groups, ASL practice groups, outdoors groups and others. To find people with similar interests in your city, check it out.

Outdoors Clubs: If you enjoy the outdoors, organizations such as the Trails Club of Oregon, or Mazamas a Portland hiking, rock climbing, skiing club might be right for you. There also is the Willamette Sailing Club, and Bergreunde Mountain Friends, an outdoor, sports and social club.

Singles Clubs: Events and Adventures is a singles club for people in Oregon and SW Washington.

LoveTribe: A different way to connect with people: There is an organization called LoveTribe, all about bringing people together and helping them connect in nontraditional ways to create a feeling of community with parties like snuggle parties and game nights. Their events are edgy, not a dating service, and certainly not right for all people, but something different to try. LoveTribe started in Portland and has branched out to many other cities.

Online dating: Let say you don’t read books, can’t dance, don’t like the outdoors, and have no hobbies, so none of those social clubs seem right to you. When you have tried everything else, or you don’t have any time (or money) to attend a social club, there is always the internet. Craigslist is free and always has local personal ads. I know two different middle school teachers who met their husbands through online personal ads, one with Eharmony and the other with Match.com. And neither woman is afraid to tell people that’s how she met her husband. Craigslist and Okcupid are free. As a result, there is also a higher rate of unemployed people without cars and cell phones. On the plus side, Okcupid is said to cater to a younger, nerdier crowd. Plenty of Fish and Christian Singles are other dating sites. And there are many more out there.

Date Rape Prevention

Date Rape Prevention
According to ACADV (Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence) 38 percent of date rape victims are girls between the ages of 14 to 17. Their website reports, “More than half [the] young women raped (68 percent) knew their rapist either as a boyfriend, friend or casual acquaintance.”
It is difficult to ignore the magnitude of these statistics. And yet, women and young women in our culture are apt to say, “it won’t happen to me” and parents say, “it won’t happen to my child.” This mentality creates a bubble of ignorance and denial about these topics.
One proactive approach to prevention is having a plan for dating safety, whether for yourself or for your children. The Domestic Violence Advocacy Program of Family Resources, Inc. offers these preventative measures so that young women are not put in a situation which will make them feel unsafe.

Dating Safety
  • Consider double-dating the first few times you go out with a new person.
  • Before leaving on a date, know the exact plans for the evening and make sure a parent or friend knows these plans and what time to expect you home. Let your date know that you are expected to call or tell that person when you get in.
  • Be aware of your decreased ability to react under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • If you leave a party with someone you do not know well, make sure you tell another person you are leaving and with whom. Ask a friend to call and make sure you arrived home safely.
  • Assert yourself when necessary. Be firm and straightforward in your relationships.
  • Trust your instincts. If a situation makes you uncomfortable, try to be calm and think of a way to remove yourself from the situation.
Other tips anonymous women have provided when dating someone for the first time:

  • Meet somewhere well-lit in public. Having dinner at a restaurant with other people around is safer than going someplace alone with him like his house or even hiking in the woods in the evening.
  • Meet somewhere familiar. Perhaps it is a coffee shop that you frequent where the wait staff knows you by face or name.
  • Select a location with multiple exits.
  • Never get in a car with someone you don't know.
  • Don't leave your drink unattended at a party, bar or restaurant.

Lady Chatterley’s Top Ten Worst First Dates

1. The “gentleman” who twitched the entire time and probably was pinching snuff.
2. The one who arrived to tea at noon reeking of alcohol.
3. The country gentleman who arrived fifteen minutes late smelling of onion breath. (Because Lady Chatterley felt bad for him, she went on a second date in which he arrived an hour late because he had no carriage and was unable to instant telegram because he had no portable personal contraption).
4. The amateur writer who brought his writing even though she requested him not to, subjected her to reading it, and therein exposed himself to her infamous red pen.
5. The poet who brought his love poetry to their first courtship. Ahem, he also was the gentleman who twitched.
6. The man who admitted he cheated on his first wife because EVERYONE cheats, he claimed. (Alright, so Lady Chatterley of the novel isn’t exactly a stranger in that arena. Still, this was real life.)
7. The gentleman who admitted within the first ten minutes of conversation that his mother lost her job as a state nurse for seducing an inmate.
8. The man she couldn’t tell whether she had anything in common with because she did not speak Japanese. . . .He didn’t speak English.
9. The man who didn’t show up. And never returned her instant telegrams or post, or offered any explanation why he didn’t show up.
10. The knave who brought his friend along uninvited.
11. The geezer who lied about his age. He’d said he was in his forties when he was in reality fifty. Being a lawyer, he insisted he was within the realm of fact, as he’d made the claim when he was forty-nine—several weeks before.  (Yes, she should have spotted the silver roots against the black dyed hair but the dim candlelight of the ball where she’d met him had camouflaged wrinkles and gray hair until she met him again for tea.)
12. The man who lied and said he was divorced, but was only separated—and had been for a month.
13. The one who insisted on escorting Lady Chatterley to her carriage and tried to kiss her even though she’d warned him earlier she would not kiss a man on the first date.

Obviously, she had more than ten dreadful dates to speak of. Please feel free to leave your stories here.
